Summary0018918: Change "Leave the floor with 0 credits" to "Leave the floor with less than 5 credits"
DescriptionThis probation item can be kind of micro-heavy in a not fun way, for a pretty small reward. If you pick up every credit on the floor then buy everything you can, you might end up with 1-4 credits that you can't spend. Sometimes you can spend the remainder on items from the cheap item shop, but not always. To avoid this, I leave a few 1 credit drops behind so I can bring my credit count back to 5 if need be, then spend 5 credits on experience points. So I have to suppress the impulse to pick up every credit. Then I have to backtrack after clearing all the rooms to pick up credits and buy items. You spend all this effort for (if memory serves) 25 credits, 3 keycards and a few missiles.

If the point of the probation is to empty your wallet for a reward (thus possibly having to pass up some good items on the following floor), change the condition to have less than 5 credits at the end of the floor. If the point really is to make you count credits to reach exactly 0, then I suggest upping the reward to match the effort involved.

Yeah, to be honest the whole probation thing...doesn't really work very well. One of the next overhauls is intended to be in this area, so at some point I expect the whole probation stuff to be reworked. As for this specfic issue, I believe that Ptarth was looking at implementing the fix that you mention, but I'm not sure when he'll be able to make the changes.
