What Makes Alden Ridge Unique?
Alden Ridge is a game about problem solving, first and foremost. You can't carry your inventory between levels,
so you have to size up each environment and figure out a way to meet your objectives without getting killed -- often this
must be done while eluding the everpresent Dead that hunt you.
Enemies
The Dead roam the land, but not all Dead act the same. Some simply chase you, some
smash through walls or leap over obstacles to get to you, some lurk and wait to jump out at you, while still others
are headless and so just run around at high speeds.
Flora, Fauna, and Insects: Many plants, animals, and insects have been affected by the apocalypse that brought
the Dead to roam the countryside. Most don't actively hunt you, but they'll happily kill you if you get in their way.
Elder Creatures: The apocalypse released more than just the Dead and mutated animals -- some truly frightening
horrors have seeped out of the earth and now await your discovery.
Level Design
Tricky Puzzles: The first few levels aren't overly challenging, but it will still take some thinking just to figure out
how to use all the new items you stumble upon. Later levels can be quite devilish, and will often
require you to try several approaches before you find one that works.
Bonus Objectives: Every level contains optional bonus objectives that you can complete to get
"gold" status on the level. Even the easiest levels' bonus objectives tend to be quite a challenge, often requiring
you to forgo the easy path and attempt death-defying acts of bravery.
Realtime Events: Some levels feature earthquakes, tornados, avalanches, etc -- these can be even trickier to
navigate as you try to survive the mayhem around you while meeting your goals.
Two Players Or One: Every level in the game can be played with one or two players. When two players are present,
most levels have extra enemies, extra items, and a few even have other differences (new paths open, old paths closed, etc).
Tools and Weapons
Vehicles: The game has several vehicles, from watercraft to bicycles to hot air balloons. Sometimes these are
just used for speeding travel in the overworld, but usually they feature in some sort of puzzle.
Unique Weapons: You won't find your standard array of guns and knives here -- the Dead are immune to most of those.
Instead you'll be using makeshift weapons like iron tacks, one-tined pitchforks, glass jars full of water, spear walls,
scythes, bombs, and grenades. Fire is also an excellent weapon.
Many Tools: Sometimes a non-lethal tool can be just as effective at furthering your objectives. Set trees on fire
with your lantern to kill enemies -- or use it to power your hot air balloon. Chop smaller trees with the axe or smash
down doors with a sledge hammer (if you don't have a key). The mirror lets you see invisible enemies, while the whip
lets you cross small gaps or stun enemies. Draw enemies away from you with bait, or reveal a hidden path through an
obstacle (marsh, lava pit, etc) with the map.
Other
Built-In Level Editor: The very same level editor that was used to create all the content in the game is yours
to command. It's a pretty simple interface for how much power it exposes; create your own levels to share with friends,
or create entire adventures of your own to share on the Internet. The choice is yours!
Weather isn't just scenery. Sometimes it restricts visibility -- like heavy snow or darkness -- and other times
it provides tactical advantages -- the Dead can't go out in the rain, for instance. Tornados not only threaten you,
they'll sometimes kill your enemies for you or carve paths into buildings that you otherwise couldn't get into.
